Competitor SEO Analysis
Competitor SEO analysis that shows exactly where you are losing traffic
Your SEO competitors are not always your business competitors. The sites taking your search traffic are frequently directories, marketplaces, national brands and businesses two cities away — and you cannot plan around them without knowing who they are.
A competitor analysis replaces assumption with evidence: who ranks, for what, using which pages, and which of their positions are genuinely contestable.
What this delivers
- A clear picture of who you are actually competing with in search
- A prioritised list of keyword and content gaps worth closing
- Realistic link opportunities rather than a generic prospect list
- A benchmark to measure progress against the market
What's included
What competitor SEO analysis covers
Competitor identification
The sites actually competing for your commercial searches, ranked by overlap — usually a different list from the competitors you name in a sales meeting.
Ranking comparison
Where each competitor ranks across your priority keyword set, and where you sit alongside them.
Keyword gap analysis
Terms competitors rank for that you do not appear for at all, filtered to those with genuine commercial value.
Content gap analysis
Topics and page types they cover and you do not — usually where the fastest expansion opportunities sit.
Backlink opportunity research
Links competitors have that a business like yours could realistically earn: directories, associations, suppliers, local press and industry listings.
Search visibility benchmark
A baseline of relative visibility across the keyword set, so movement can be tracked against the market rather than in isolation.
Landing page strategy review
How they structure the pages that outrank you — depth, format, internal links, conversion paths, and what is actually doing the work.
Strengths and weaknesses summary
Where each competitor is genuinely strong, where they are exposed, and which positions are worth attacking first.
In detail
How competitor SEO analysis actually works
Your SEO competitors are probably not who you think
Ask a business owner who their competitors are and you will hear about the firm down the road. Look at who occupies the first page for their money keywords and it is often Justdial, IndiaMART, a national aggregator and a competitor in a different city entirely.
This matters because the strategy differs completely. You do not outrank a directory the way you outrank a local firm — you outrank it by being the specific, credible answer it can only list generically.
| Competitor type | Why they rank | How you compete |
|---|---|---|
| Local business competitor | Comparable authority, better on-page and local signals | Directly winnable — better pages, better profile, deeper local content. |
| Directory or marketplace | Enormous domain authority and page volume | Win on specificity and depth. Directories cannot answer a detailed question well. |
| National brand | Domain authority built over years | Compete locally and on long-tail. Head terms are usually not worth the fight. |
| Content publisher / blog | Topical authority on informational queries | Compete only where the query has commercial intent; ignore the rest. |
What the analysis examines
- 01
Search visibility overlap
Which sites appear repeatedly across your priority keyword set. Frequency of appearance identifies real competitors better than reputation does.
- 02
Page-level teardown
For each keyword you care about, the specific page that ranks — its format, depth, structure, internal links and how it handles conversion.
- 03
Keyword gap
Terms where they have visibility and you have none. Filtered hard: most gaps are not worth closing.
- 04
Content gap
Topic areas they cover comprehensively. Frequently reveals demand you did not know existed.
- 05
Link profile review
Where their links come from, and which of those sources are genuinely reachable for a business at your stage.
- 06
Weakness mapping
Thin pages, outdated content, poor mobile experience, missing local pages, ignored Google Business Profiles — the openings.
Reading a competitor page properly
The useful question is not "what do they have that we do not" but "why is this page satisfying the search better than ours".
- Format — is it a guide, a service page, a comparison, a listing? Format mismatch alone explains many ranking gaps
- Depth — which sub-questions do they answer that you skip entirely
- Specificity — do they include prices, process detail, timelines, real examples where you generalise
- Structure — is the answer immediate, or buried under introduction
- Internal links — how many internal links point at that page, and with what anchor text
- Freshness — when was it last meaningfully updated, in a category where that matters
Backlinks: what is realistic and what is not
Competitor backlink reports are usually a list of links you will never get — press coverage from a funding round, a mention in a national publication, links from a decade of accumulated PR.
The useful subset is small and repeatable: industry associations, supplier and partner pages, local business directories, chambers of commerce, sponsorships, client sites, and genuinely useful resources people cite. Those are the ones this analysis surfaces.
Turning the analysis into a plan
The output is not a report to file. Every gap becomes an item on the SEO roadmap, scored by commercial value and effort, so the sequence of work follows evidence about where you are actually losing.
